** 06-01-2018 – Message from Fr. Roger Caswell re. the future of St. James The Great ** It was in the early summer of 2016 that St James Parochial Church Council reluctantly made the decision that the time had come when the church would have to close. St James’s history stretches back over more than 100 years. Originally a daughter church of St Mary’s, it became a parish in its own right, and has faithfully served the people of an area which over recent years has become steadily more socially deprived. Once the decision was made to close the church, there was a period of consultation, headed by the Archdeacon of Chichester. The Friends of Mewsbrook Park primary role is to encourage the participation of the local community in caring for one of Littlehampton’s finest parks. To achieve this we have a small committee which steers the focus of the group and seeks to increase membership. We work closely with Arun District Council’s Parks and Greenspaces Service and Mewsbrook Park Café to ensure the park provides a popular site for relaxation and play whilst being mindful of habitat & heritage conservation and maintaining horticultural standards. The group also raises funds from time-to-time to fund or part-fund various projects in the park which add to the visitor’s experience. We are also keen to see more inclusivity, and have recently joint funded a new accessibility bench for wheelchair users. Our most recent contribution to the park has been a new sculpture. New members are always welcome, and those who have the extra time are encouraged to become committee members to help the group (and therefore local residents) have a voice about the park. Annual membership costs just £5. For this fee you’ll be invited to our AGM where you have the opportunity feedback directly to the committee or ask questions of ADC. You’ll also […]
